Desiree, the “fidgety twin,” and Stella, “a smart, careful girl,” make their break from stultifying rural Mallard, Louisiana, becoming 16-year-old runaways in 1954 New Orleans. The talented Bennett fuels her fiction with secrets-first in her lauded debut, The Mothers (2016), and now in the assured and magnetic story of the Vignes sisters, light-skinned women parked on opposite sides of the color line. ![]() Inseparable identical twin sisters ditch home together, and then one decides to vanish. ![]() ![]() ![]() Gardner also develops the theme of heroism as another moral force that enables society to advance by elevating Unferth, a minor character in the original poem, to a major character and foil for Grendel. Such is the power of art, Gardner seems to be saying, that even a monster can be affected by it. As a would-be artist, Grendel strives, however comically, to escape from his baseness. In Gardner's version, however, Grendel becomes a three-dimensional character with, in Howell's words, "a sense of humor and a gift for language." Grendel even has a weakness for poetry. ![]() A relatively minor character in Beowulf, Grendel is a symbol for "darkness, chaos, and death," according to critic John M. ![]() As a professor of English specializing in medieval literature, Gardner had been teaching Beowulf, the source of inspiration for Grendel, for many years at various colleges. The novel was praised as a literary tour de force and named a book of the year by Time Newsweek magazines. Completed in 1970 and published the following year, Grendel was the first of John Gardner's novels to bring him not just critical but popular success. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Instead, the story could have focused more on Joey's adjustment to attending a signing Deaf school as an oral Deaf kid, which would have been a much more interesting and original storyline than some ridiculous 'teenager travels cross-country to rescue a language trained ape' plotline. I think the story could have been much better if a) Charlie was part of a research team rather than some weirdo rich loner, b) Sukari didn't end up willed to Joey or in a medical research laboratory. And most language trained chimps have never been sent to a medical research laboratory, so why does every book have to go there? The overall impression is that Sukari is just a tool to deliver the author's ham-fisted animal rights message. There isn't a huge excess of chimps, either, and zoos are actually trying pretty hard to breed them. They certainly don't get willed to teenagers, especially disabled teenagers. In real life, language trained chimps don't belong to random old guys in the woods, but instead are raised by graduate students working with a university. It read like a poorly thought out rip off of Kenneth Oppel's Half Brother, with a lot more fridge logic issues. However, I felt that Sukari (the chimpanzee) and her plotline was not very believable. ![]() The characters of Joey and her family and the way they grow in this book felt very real. ![]() ![]() ![]() Joe is intelligent, intimidating, and politically adept enough to eventually leave his hometown and rise to the top of the Tampa crime scene, playing the Italian and Irish mobs off of each other. In Live by Night, Affleck plays Joe Coughlin, a petty criminal in Prohibition-era Boston who robs card games and speakeasies with fellow hoods and hangers-on. ![]() Why can’t Affleck direct himself to a good performance? In his two previous films, The Town and Argo, he played characters burdened with uninteresting arcs but who orchestrated the action around them-it’s almost as if Affleck can only imagine himself as a director within his own movies. Live by Night, Affleck’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning smash Argo is a fascinating mess of a movie, but it’s undone in part by the charisma vacuum at its center. Sadly, that actor is also Ben Affleck, and his appearances in these films show no sign of abating. He keeps casting this stiff, uncomfortable-looking actor in his lead roles, a man who too often seems distracted and unhappy, lacking the movie-star charisma he’s shown in other projects. ![]() ![]() As a filmmaker, he long ago proved himself an interesting, versatile voice in Hollywood, an heir to the gritty crime-thriller directors of the ’70s who excelled at staging small-scale action and getting big, pulpy performances from well-selected ensembles. ![]() ![]() ![]() Stick to tonal sparkle in neutral hues …Sequin Blouses for Women: Shop Indian sequin blouse online at Kalki Fashion. $29.99.A subtle sequin blouse looks amazing under a tailored blazer, just pair it with a sophisticated pencil skirt and heels and you’re set.
